Suffering from dry skin?

by Leen Cammaerts |

With the change of seasons it’s best to adapt your skin care as well. In the winter, your skin will probably need some extra protection. Because of the wind, cold and dry air, your skin produces less oil than in the summer, causing it to dry out more quickly, resulting in fine lines and a tired and grey complexion.

Depending on your skin type, it may be a good idea to adjust your daily skincare with the shift of the seasons. We’re happy to share our tips with you!

Some basic CÎME tips for dry skin:

  • Be sure to keep the humidity level in your house at the right level and avoid hot showers. We all look forward to a nice and warm shower when we're on our way home from a rainstorm, but hot water will make your skin dry out even more!
  • Use sulphate-free products to cleanse your skin, since sulphates dry out the skin. Luckily all our products are 100% sulphate-free!
  • Stay hydrated! Did you know our skin is made up of over 70% of water? Water isn’t just for washing your hands. It’s important to drink enough water to maintain an elastic skin and to let it shine. For proper hydration, it’s recommended you drink at least 1,5 liters of water a day.

1. Adjust your day and night cream according to the season

During winter your skin might need a richer day cream to keep your skin protected from the harsh & dry conditions and the icy cold and wind.

Do you have combination skin?

Then you’re probably using our Daisy Delight as your go-to day and night cream. During winter it’s worth trying to step your day and night cream up a notch. In this case we would recommend Belle d’Amour as your skin's winter match!

Do you have normal skin?

Then you’re probably using our Belle d'Amour as your daily day and night cream. If you're skin is feeling more dry and dull during winter and you feel like you can use a richer day and night cream, try switching to Under my Skin during the cold winter months!

Want to work on those wrinkles and drying lines?

Then switch to our Nutri-Intense day and night cream. This contains high-performance superheroes like sea buckthorn rich in vitamin C, retinal, hexa-peptides, hyaluronic acid and edelweiss, which improve your skin's hydration and elasticity, intensely nourish your skin and reduce and prevent wrinkles and fine lines. Ideal during the dry winter months!

CÎME tip: You can also add a few drops of our repairing serum into your day and night cream before applying it to your face and neckline.

3. Don’t forget about your hands!

Your hands, just like your face, can suffer a lot during winter. Snowball fight, anyone? Or taking a ride on your bicycle on an icy winter day? Even if you wear warm mittens, your hands will get drier and rougher. To restore them, you should apply hand cream regularly. CÎME’s nutri-intensive hand cream, For Your Hands Only, enriched with apricot kernel oil and aloë extract from the Himalayas, deeply nourishes and protects the hands around the clock. Thanks to its soft-textured formula it easily penetrates the skin, rendering your hand silky smooth in no time. Perfect to quickly apply on the ski lift.

How to wash your hands without damaging them?

  • Don’t use hot water to clean your hands, use lukewarm water instead.
  • Use sulfate-free skincare products. Luckily, all our products are free of sulfates! Use our Nuts about You hand & body wash or wash & scrub for gently, yet thoroughly cleansing your hands. Based on an ancient Himalayan tradition, we use organic soap nuts that naturally wash your skin, without drying it out or irritating it. Learn more about it here.
  • Blot your hands dry instead of rubbing them dry.
  • Apply our nutri-intensive hand cream, For Your Hands Only, to your hands after washing them.

4. Scrub first, then hydrate!

Do you suffer from dry skin on your arms and legs, especially in winter?
Use a scrub and apply a nourishing body lotion afterwards. It’s important to get rid of all your dead skin cells first, so you can deeply hydrate your soft new baby skin afterwards!

Start with a scrub

Our Magnificent Mandarine body scrub and bath salt is the perfect match for a luxurious aromatic pampering moment. It stimulates circulation and removes dead skin cells, resulting in soft and rejuvenated skin

For a gentle daily scrub we have our brand new Wash & scrub! Fine natural scrub particles gently exfoliate to reveal silky soft and glowing skin, day after day.

CÎME scrubbing tips

    • Add l’Huile by CÎME to a handful of crystals when using our Magnificent Mandarin scrub, for an intense nourishment during your scrubbing!

5. Miracle worker for dry and chapped skin

In winter, the air is a lot drier than in summer, which makes the top layer of the skin dry out easily. Inside the skin, the blood vessels will start to contract, this way providing less nourishment to the skin from the inside out. This results in dry, rough skin that flakes easily. Lips are particularly sensitive to this, because they hardly contain any sebaceous glands.

That's why the cold winter weather often goes hand in hand with chapped lips.

Le Baume by CÎME does wonders for repairing dry and chapped lips

Thanks to the rich formula of organic apricot kernel oil, chiuri butter, (cruelty free) beeswax and chamomile, the balm puts a subtle layer on your skin and lips, so that they are protected against dehydration, without closing your pores. Moreover, this balm makes rough, dried out and cracked lips and skin soft and supple again.

This nourishing, soothing, protective and repairing balm protects your lips from extreme cold and wind to keep them soft and nourished all winter long!
It’s ideal for the whole family and also great for traveling thanks to it’s pocket size!

Extra tip: Also repairs rough skin on your hands and elbows!

Why not just use any lip balm?
Skincare products can penetrate deeply into your skin, so it’s important to know exactly what you’ll be applying. We know this isn’t an easy task, so we’re happy to help you find out. We briefly explained which ingredients in a lip balm are best to avoid and which ones we recommend in our blog post.

6. Your winter pharmacy in one tube!

Our Himalaya 29°N-81°E is an all-round first aid balm to keep with you at all times to treat all emergency ailments. It contains a unique blend of 7 Himalayan powerful essential oils, each with their own benefits, and Himalayan chiuri butter to keep the skin soft and nourished.

Cracked skin

Cracked skin occurs when the skin is extremely dry. In winter, the air is extra dry, not only outside, but also inside. Our tip: use a moisturizing cream, like our Himalayan balm whenever possible to avoid and heal cracked skin.

The precious essential oil of chamomile in the formula is well appreciated for its calming, soothing and skin regenerating properties and will work miracles for irritated or cracked skin and scars.

Respiratory problems

The combination of essential oils of rhododendron and cornmint oil work as a decongestant for the respiratory system and help to clear the respiratory tract.

7. Sunscreen in winter?

Does this sound weird to you? Actually, it does make sense. Because even if you don’t see the sun – the sun is constantly shining UV-rays to the earth. There are two kinds of UV rays. UVB causes sunburn and turns you lobster-red. It’s true that the intensity of UVB varies by season, location and temperature. But, next to these UVB-rays, there are also UVA-rays, which are more harmful because they penetrate more deeply into the skin and can cause wrinkles, pigmentation spots and other skin damage. Unfortunately, UVA will even damage your skin when the sun is not shining. So, not only when you’re chilling at the beach on a sunny day in August, but also when you’re walking to work on a rainy day in January. Therefore, sun protection is necessary in every season – so put on your sunscreen guys!

Keep it simple

Luckily, you don’t have to add an extra ‘apply your sunscreen’-step in your daily beauty ritual. All CÎME day and night creams contain natural sun protection. This thanks to the use of edelweiss extract in Daisy Delight and Belle d’amour and the use of sea buckthorn berries in the Under My Skin day and night cream.

Are you spending this winter on a warm beach in the sun, or are you going on a ski trip? Then definitely use a natural sunscreen on top to protect your skin profoundly against bright and harmful sun rays. A day and night cream you apply once in the morning hardly replaces a sunscreen you apply multiple times a day during long skin exposure to the sun.

What definitely not to change in your skincare routine?

Cleansing remains key!

We recommend that you always start your skincare routine by cleansing your skin with our oil cleanser Recette de Pureté and/or our cleansing and tonifying lotion Rosée de Roses. They both provide a deep cleansing without disturbing the skin's moisture balance, so no need to fear that they will dry out your skin! They can be used together or separately, although we are fond of the double cleansing method
